Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa State has declared full autonomy for the thirteen local
government area councils in the state.
He made the declaration during an extra ordinary local government joint account committee meeting with local government chairmen and stakeholders held in government house Lafia.
The emergency meeting came as a result of an indefinite strike embarked by the local government employees last Thursday over the deduction of their salaries and allowances.
Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura also cancelled the monthly joint account committee meeting where chairmen of local government and other stakeholders meet to re-share funds from the federation account.
He directed that henceforth, every local government would received its exact amount from the federation account without removing or adding one kobo to assist other local government.
According to him, this would encouraged other local government to work hard to generate their own revenue so as to pay their monthly salaries on time.
The governor explained that the era of brothers keepers where buoyant local governments assist those with deficit to pay their salaries will no longer be acceptable.
In an interview, the Algon Chairman of Nasarawa state, Alhaji Suleiman Wambai lamented that most of the local government councils in the state cannot pay salary without the assistance of others.
Suleiman Wambai who is also the Chairman of Lafia local government called for a total change on the revenue allocation formula from the Federal, states and the local governments in the country.
Also speaking to newsmen, the state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Abdullahi Adeka said the union would ensure that all workers of the local government were screened before receiving their salaries
About two weeks ago, a bail out cheque of four point three Billion Naira was presented to the local government council as part of Federal government efforts to address the issue of non payment of salary to local government workers in Nasarawa state.
